The Supreme Audit Office of Poland was honoured to host the delegation of the State Audit Office of the Republic of North Macedonia, led by Auditor General Maksim Acevski.
The first visit, which took place in October 2023, resulted in signing the Memorandum of Understanding between NIK and the SAI of North Macedonia. Also at that time, Auditor General Maksim Acevski invited NIK to conduct the peer review.
The delegation of the SAI of North Macedonia visited Poland on 18-20 July 2024 to continue cooperation of both SAIs and sign the bilateral agreement on peer review.
The visit started with a working meeting where details of the peer review were discussed. The delegation of North Macedonia was led by Auditor General Maksim Acevski.
The delegation spent one day of the visit at the NIK Branch in Cracow, where they got familiar with main areas of the Branch operations and specificity of the region. The key point of the meeting was signing the bilateral peer review agreement between NIK and the SAI of North Macedonia by the Heads of both SAIs. This is a significant step on the way to tightening cooperation between the two institutions.
As part of direct consultations with the SAI of North Macedonia three working groups were designated, composed of employees of both SAIs. The composition of the NIK peer review team was approved by the President of NIK. This is also a perfect opportunity for NIK employees to gain knowledge and experience in an international environment. The peer review report will be ready in autumn.
Peer review is a tool used by SAIs to have their activity evaluated by external bodies, which results in improving the work quality of audit institutions. NIK experts have participated in such reviews many times, e.g. in Estonia, Indonesia, Lithuania, Romania, Latvia, Slovakia, Hungary and the European Court of Auditors, which each time is a distinction and carries prestige in the international arena.
