The International Criminal Police Organisation associates nearly 200 countries worldwide and deals e.g. with combating terrorism, organised crime and drug crime. When appointing the external auditor, Interpol considered the candidates’ experience and qualifications as well as professionalism, confidentiality, independence and documentation security guaranteed by institutions entering the competition. The highest-rated candidate was the SAI of Poland.
Interpol has a budget of over EUR 140 million at its disposal. The Supreme Audit Office is going to verify, among other things, if Interpol’s financial reports comply with the International Public Sector Accounting Standards. NIK will also submit relevant reports to the Secretary General, the General Assembly and the Executive Committee of Interpol.
To date the Polish SAI has been the external auditor of the Council of Europe and the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). Currently NIK is carrying out a similar audit in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). NIK has its representatives also in teams auditing the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL), the European Space Agency (ESA), the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and the European Peace Facility (EPF).
Last year NIK President Marian Banaś became Vice-President of EUROSAI, or the European Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions and is a Member of the Governing Board of INTOSAI – the International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions.
